Nordwestradio-Reporterin Jessica Holzhausen berichtet.

Academic Slave Work

Academic Slave Work

One of the most threatening aspects of an academic career is insecurity. Many academics depend on short-term contracts. In Germany the lucky ones have a contract of two or three years, others have to re-sign a contract every half a year without any security that there will be a job the next time they apply. The current workload of young scientists and the expectations of leading university staff are not only a burden for many young colleagues working in the academic field, but also a real threat to academic research in its entity. Everyone knows about these problems, but only a few dare to speak openly about it, frightened to lose their job.

Being a Sex Object?

Germany finally discusses every-day sexism – a long overdue debate

Sexism and unwanted attention is something girls have to deal with at quite a young age. Even for me, growing up in a time without ubiquitous media, becoming an adult meant to compare myself with role models magazines like the German “Bravo” or even worse “Bravo Girl” contributed. Questions like “How to keep your boyfriend?” are branded into our minds from the first time we open such a magazine. Of course young girls are interested in boys and they are as bad in staring at the other sex, comparing their looks and attributes. Boys and girls are not so different in that behaviour. But what makes a difference, even though I do not want to deny boys feel the media pressure as well, girls are far more often defined by their body and looks, than their brain and learning. If you are a pretty girl you soon find out that there are (male) teachers in school you can impress more with a sweet smile than the correct answer to a question.

Hidden Artists – How Fanfiction and Fanart Inspire People

Hidden Artists – How Fanfiction and Fanart Inspire People.

Fanfiction and fanart has always been part of fan cultures, but it is clear that the Internet gave storytellers and artists a new platform and readers and admirers a far more easy access to those works. It gave fanart in all its forms a greater visibility. Before that the stories and sketches were mainly shared in real small circles of friends.

The special thing about fanart: it connects people – across borders, across continents. Even though they have completely different cultural backgrounds, they share a love for the same things: movies, series or books. It is completely breath taking to see how people on the Internet connect, share jokes, cry and laugh together and sometimes even unite in hatred against a certain character or a certain plot…
