Day 15: Wildlife

Camdeboo National Park

 

Why including two different national parks in one blog entry? Not only because I travelled there the last weekend, but also because there is the pretentious plan to once connect both parks with a grassland conservation zone.

Today the two parks already work together in the Mountain Zebra – Camdeboo Corridor Project. The project was launched in May 2012 and aims to secure the biodiversity of the grasslands and to expand the protected areas working together with current landowners, who decide to volunteer in the project. In between the two parks are approximately 50 farms, some of them already a private conservation area. Other farmers became quite worried about the impact such a zone could have on their agricultural business. But to develop a conservation zone it not only a question of nature protection but economy as well since eco-tourism is developing to one of the main economic factors in the region.

Warum ein Blogeintrag zu zwei verschiedenen Nationalparks? Nicht nur, weil ich beide am letzten Wochenende bereist habe, sondern auch weil es tatsächlich Pläne gibt, beide Parks in Zukunft einmal zusammenzulegen – durch eine Schutzzone im Grasland zwischen beiden Nationalparks.

Seit Mai 2012 gibt es das Mountain Zebra – Camdeboo Cooridor Project mit dem Ziel die biologische Vielfalt des Graslandes zu erhalten, das im Gebiet zwischen den beiden Parks liegt. Da die Fläche landwirtschaftlich genutzt wird – vor allem als Viehweiden – ist das Projekt angewiesen auf die Landbesitzer und deren freiwillige Teilnahme. Zwischen beiden Parks liegen etwa 50 Farmen, von denen einige aber bereits private Schutzzonen eingerichtet haben. Andere Landwirte hingegen sind besorgt, befürchten, dass der Umweltschutz zu Lasten ihres Betriebes gehen könnte. Dabei geht es beim Mountain Zebra – Camdeboo Cooridor Project nicht nur um den Erhalt des Graslandes, sondern auch um wirtschaftliche Interessen: Der Öko-Tourismus wird in der Region immer mehr zu einem Hauptwirtschaftsfaktor.

Um zu sehen, wie weit die beiden Nationalparks auseinanderliegen, reicht ein Blick auf die Karte. Mit dem Auto sind es mindestens zwei Stunden Fahrt, allerdings liegt das auch am Straßenverlauf.
